Attention Kiehl's fans in Hamilton!

Posted on

Kiehl’s Since 1851 opened its first free-standing store in the Burlington/Hamilton area last Wednesday in the Mapleview Centre! I was there at 5am for the CHCH Morning Live segment with Lori (watch it here) so I definitely needed Kiehl’s Abyssine Eye Cream! The caffeine in the formulation gave my skin the jolt it needed!

The Mapleview location features Kiehl’s signature apothecary aesthetic with a modern feel that includes a 1949 Indian Arrow motorcycle and a Product Testing hub where customers can experiment with products. BTW, it’s also Kiehl’s 160th anniversary this year, and you can experience that rich history at the Mapleview location through the vintage photographs and mementos that are featured throughout the space. The store also proudly displays a paddle from Camp Oochigeas, an organization supported by Kiehl’s that offers free programs for hundreds of children affected by cancer each year.

If you live in the Hamilton area, not only should you visit the store, but you should enter to win “The Ultimate Celebration Party” too! It’s a fantastic prize package — visit CHCH.com and click on the Kiehl’s banner for all the details! (BTW, the contest closes on April 28, so get your entry in!)

Here are some photos from the store’s opening:

Enjoy your new Kiehl’s, Hamilton!

Pretty pictures (and a bear head?)

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival is kicking off next week with the official launch on April 29 at Toronto’s Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. Of course, everyone at NKPR is excited about the festival! So excited, in fact, that it inspired us to dig through our own photos for our self-shot faves. While we’re all amateurs (except for Andrea who’s pretty much a pro), I think all of these photos are really beautiful! An NKPR exhibition in next year’s Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, perhaps?? 🙂

Kristin: This photo is of the Pacific Ocean from the Vancouver Island ferry. I love it because the sun was setting and it was so pretty. Also, I am totally following the rule of thirds. (I think?)

Thary: I took this photo the first time I met my grandparents who live Cambodia. They own rice fields in the country, so this is pretty much their backyard.

Brittany: Why I love my photo? It includes a beach, friends, and represents peace. What more could I ask for in a pic?

Andrea: The photo is of myself wearing a bear head. The piece explores the overlap between predator/prey relationships. I love it because of the framing and the lighting and that head is just pretty awesome.

Emily: This is a photo I took of a monkey in Monkey Forest in Ubud, Bali. I love the contradictions in his body language. Those innocent eyes staring up at me while his razor-sharp claws dig into the tree. It’s like he’s trying to make me believe he’s not bitter about getting the short end of the evolution stick. (He stole a banana from me immediately after the shot was taken, so revenge was his.)

Lauren: The black rock beach in Santorini, Greece. The most serene place I’ve ever visited. Looking at this photo makes me feel calm (even when I’m not…).

Kaley: A tall beautiful stranger tucks my note into a safe spot up high at the Western Wall, Jerusalem.

Rebecca: The photo is of Bondi Beach in Australia. I love it because it represents one of my favourite vacations and also because I think it’s amazing that a beach could be that crowded on a weekday with no other special events going on. I also hate this photo because it reminds me that I don’t live in a country where a beach could be that crowded on a weekday with no other special events going on.

Heather: This is my husband, showing off, during a bike tour around Versailles on our honeymoon. It’s one of my favourites from our trip because even though we had just taken this seemingly giant step toward “adulthood,” we clearly had (have?) problems bidding adieu to our 10-year-old selves.

Cat: I took this photo outside of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. It’s my hand inside someone else’s hand drawn on a pole. I took the photo really quickly because I felt self-conscious about touching a stranger’s ‘hand’ in public but I thought it would make a good photo. I’m glad I took it because now when I look at this photograph I’m right back in that moment – feeling anxious but really connected to everything at the same time. It’s like I was imprinting the universe on my hand.

Sarah: San Blas Islands in Panama — nothing but white sand and palm trees. It was the closest thing to paradise I have ever seen!

As for my favourite photos… I love this pic! I was so excited when I realized these were baked and had only half the calories… so I could eat twice as much!!! 🙂
And this one. I love my team!

Inside my closet…

If you’re into fashion like the NKPR team is, then you’ve probably heard of The Coveteur. If you haven’t, you need to check it out! The site is an ingenious fashion treat that the founders (designer Erin Kleinberg and stylist Stephanie Mark) describe as a peek “inside the closets of internationally influential cultural forecasters, showing us what culminates in their personal style – one item at a time.” Last week, I was so excited (and honoured!) to welcome Erin, Stephanie, photographer Jake Rosenberg and their wonderful intern into my closet. With NKPR account coordinators extraordinaire (and fashion addicts!) Kaley and Rebecca on hand to help me choose my faves, we all had such a great time going through my clothes! The story and Jake’s photos will go up on The Coveteur site very soon, so stay tuned! Until then, here are some fun behind-the-scenes shots!

My big Birkin and my baby Birkin!

Rebecca modeling my Chanel hat.

Shoes!!

Me and two of my favourite Miu Miu pieces — a tunic and a dress — in black, of course. (Kaley likes to call them the “Miu Miu Twins.”)

My tower of accessories.

Okay, now that you’ve seen all of my stuff, I want to see yours! 🙂 Tweet me a photo of your closet @natashankpr!

Get outside!

This week in the NKPR office, we hosted a media preview of Teva’s Spring 2011 footwear collection. Trying on shoes and sandals designed for outdoor adventure, plus warm spring weather got us thinking about the great outdoors, so we took a survey: camping or glamping?

(Glamping = glamourous/luxury camping)

Katy: If glamping includes a Muskoka cottage with a speed boat, wakeboards and a roaring fire than you know where to find me…

Heather: Camping. Smores just don’t taste the same when you make them in the microwave.

Cat: Camping! It builds character.

Kristen: My one memory of camping was when I was 6 in Drumheller. I sat in a tent while it rained eating a bucket KFC while my mother threw up from food poisoning. (Disclaimer: KFC was not responsible for the food poisoning.) We went back the next morning. I haven’t camped since. Glamping seems preferable.

Sarah: Camping! Keep it real.

Jenna: Camping! There’s nothing like the peace, quiet and ‘being one with nature’. It’s not the same thing as watching the Discovery channel in your hotel room.

Bunmi: Glamping for sure! I like nothing better than holing up in a boutique hotel, wrapping myself up in fine linens, ordering room service and watching movies in a big, comfy king-sized bed. Who’s going to put a chocolate on your pillow in the woods?!

Andrea: Camping. I prefer wind over a hair dryer.

Aimee: Camping. And portaging in my new Teva CHURN shoes of course!

Rebecca: Glamping because the best part of camping is roasting hot dogs and thanks to modern kitchen tools, those bad boys can be enjoyed in air conditioning.

André: Mimicking the TV show Survivor while camping.

And Jeanette takes the (campfire) cake for transporting us to the wilderness with her amazing camping itinerary:

“There’s nothing like canoeing to a remote location with your tent, supplies and a beater guitar. Setting up camp in the peace of the wilderness, feeling all of your city-concerns slide away. Making a delicious dinner of grilled chicken and baked potatoes with all the fixings. Some fine wine, a campfire jam and spooky stories before bed. Waking up to a morning swim on a beautiful sunny day and setting out in the canoe to find a wilderness hiking trail. Back for some afternoon reading and water play. Enjoy another evening meal and festivities before slipping into a deep restful wilderness sleep. Paddle out the next day feeling rested and refreshed and enjoy a nice dinner at a restaurant on the way home to the city.”

Anyone care to join her on a weekend trip?! 🙂

As for me: I’m a glamper all the way. 🙂

What about you? Are you a camper or a glamper? Tell us in a tweet!

Women Who Inspire Us

This blog post is for the ladies! 🙂 On April 20, I’ll be taking part in a roundtable session called “The Power of Female Bloggers” as part of the 2011 Marketing to Women Conference.

With Kristin Laird moderating and Donna Marie Antoniadis, Mia Pearson and Elaine Kunda on the panel, I’m in incredible company! While I was talking about the event with my team, we got to thinking about the women we most admire (our moms not included!). Here’s our list, in no particular order:

Emily: Tina Fey. She reminds the world that women are funny, too.

Jeannette: Ayn Rand. She inspired and motivated me at a pivotal point in my life. (I read everything I could find that she had written, including her unfinished works.)

Jenna: Renee Fleming. Her singing voice is powerful and pure, incredibly rich and totally seductive. Listening to her is hypnotizing…

Nicole: Germaine Greer. She’s a revolutionary and one of the most significant feminist voices. She’s a living legend!

Heather: Martha Stewart. Model-turned-stockbroker-turned-jailbird-turned-one woman empire. She created a personal brand, and when that was tarnished, she re-invented it and herself. Plus, she made it okay for women to enjoy cooking and decorating without a Stepford-wife stigma.

André: Alicia Keys. Gorgeous, successful and talented. Most of all, a very active philanthropist.

Lauren: The big O(prah). Do I get a car now?

Thary: Tina Fey. Smart, funny and beautiful. Everything I wish I could be.

Kaley: Joni Mitchell circa l970. Her voice makes me smile a lot. If she could sing to me forever and ever that would be so great.

As for me…

  • Marilyn Monroe – She was fragile, kind, real, beautiful, talented… and NOT skinny!! 🙂
  • Arianna Huffington – She is super smart, bold, not afraid to speak her mind. And she makes sh*t happen!
  • Angelina Jolie – Love how she gives back, and not just financially, but in every way. She knows her priorities, is a great mother and unapologetic.
  • Madonna – She is so strong.

Our hair… if we dared!

Posted on

With the Goody media preview in our office this past Tuesday and Wednesday, we’ve had great hair on our minds all week! So, for today’s Fun Friday blog post, we’re talking hair! But not just any hair — the hairstyles we wish we had the guts/hair type to pull off! Here’s what we would do, if our hair dreams came true…

Brittany: Dreadlocks. There is literally zero up-keep.

Emily: A sleek blonde bob. But my hair is way too frizzy and brown.

Lauren: I wish I could rock Willow Smith’s do…

Thary: An afro. Because I’m a whole lotta woman. 🙂

André: Will i am’s cut. It’s always fresh.

Heather: Okay, it’s not a “style” per se, but I’ve always wondered if blondes have more fun.

Kristin: Voluminous curls. Unfortunately, my hair has neither curl nor volume.

Jenna: The pixie cut! Or really long, wavy Victoria Secret model hair.

Nicole: A Cleopatra bob with bangs, sans wig.

Bunmi: I can rock any. That’s the beauty of extensions!! I whip my hair!!

Hot summer hair

Life’s a beach at NKPR these days! Seriously! The boardroom has been transformed into a tropical island getaway for a Goody media preview event. See?

That lounge chair looks so comfortable, doesn’t it? We just may have to keep it around for meetings! 🙂 The relaxing atmosphere aside, the space has been buzzing with Goody activity for the last two days! The media who attended our event got to see some of Goody’s newest summer accessories and collections in action! Here are some of our favourite looks:

The beachy waves look was a big hit with everyone. If you love that style, too, try Goody’s new Summer Waves Foam Rollers. (BTW, the rollers are so soft and comfortable that you can sleep in them!)

This look was inspired by the amazing top knots seen on the runways at Cynthia Rowley and it’s really easy to get. Just twist your hair at the crown and secure with the Goody Simple Styles Bun Spiral. It’s a beautiful, chic way to wear your hair up for summer, don’t you think?

The girls in the office all loved the top knot look! Here’s Kaley rocking it with a floral accessory from the Goody Island Sun Collection:

Beginning in May, you can find the Goody Summer Waves Foam Rollers, the Simple Styles Bun Spiral and the Island Sun Collection at Walmart locations across Canada.

If you’re suffering from the Monday blahs, I have just the thing: toys and celebrities! What’s more anti-blah than that? 🙂

Last week was huge for Hollywood and the Gogo’s! From March 31 – April 1, Gogo’s Crazy Bones took Los Angeles by storm at the GBK Gift Lounge in honour of the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards! (Did you watch the awards this year? I heard that Heidi Klum got slimed!) So many stars came by, including Michael Jackson’s kids Paris, Prince and Prince Michael II (a.k.a. Blanket). Gogo’s ambassador and star of Wizards of Waverly Place Bailee Madison was there, too. She showed celebrities and media her favorite Gogo’s games and officially announced the Win A Day with Bailee! contest, open to fans at gogoscrazybones.com.

Here are some of the other famous faces who got their Gogo’s fix!:

Recording artist Cody Simpson

Big Time Rush’s Stephen Kramer Glickman

Aubrey O’Day, multi-platinum recording artist

Chuy Bravo from Chelsea Lately

Devon Bostock, star of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (on the right), and actor Max Topplin (left)

Modern Family’s Rico Rodriguez and his new Gogo’s limited edition gold tin!

Gia Mantegna, up-and-coming actress and Miss Golden Globe 2011

Star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager and 80’s icon Molly Ringwald with her daughter Mathilda

See? Don’t you feel better about Monday already? 🙂
