Blog_Saje_Wellness Goal

We all pledge to make New Year’s resolutions come January 1st, whether it’s promising to get back to the gym, meal prep on Sunday’s, get a full 8 hours of sleep, the list goes on… But setting such large goals can sometimes put a lot of pressure on ourselves to commit and see those goals through, especially when we don’t quite know where to start.

Saje Wellness recently launched their #SpreadWellness campaign, encouraging their community to set and celebrate daily wellness goals. Kiara LeBlanc, VP of Brand and Creative Director at Saje, says it best: setting a daily wellness goal is a commitment that she makes to herself that invests in her happiness. Watch members of the Saje team explain the concept of #SpreadWellness including their own personal wellness goal in the video below….

The NKPR team accepted the Saje Wellness #SpreadWellness challenge! See some of our daily wellness goals:

Natasha: I’m pledging to take more time for me. That includes taking the time to stretch before AND after every workout instead of rushing through it.

Katie: My daily wellness goal is to take a 10-15 walk during my work day!

Nathan: My wellness goal for today is to drink an entire 1 litre of Flow Water.

NKPR’s Best Romantic Comedies of All Time!

Posted on

Around the NKPR office, we love to talk about love! Whether it’s the breakups and makeups of our favourite Hollywood stars, the ups and downs of our own love lives, or the latest and greatest in romantic comedies… love is a hot-topic for us!

Not that we ever need an excuse to put on a cheesy, hopelessly romantic movie on a Sunday afternoon… but with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to round up NKPR staffers’ best romantic comedies of all time!

Whether you’re single or attached, admit we all enjoy a good ol’ fashioned rom-com to inspire and remind us that love truly is worth celebrating.

Read on for our all-time favourites…

Natasha:
You’ve Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks!! My favourite quote is: “The odd thing about this form of communication is that you’re more likely to talk about nothing than something but I just want to say that all this nothing has meant more to me than so many somethings.” So romantic!

You've Got Mail Meg Ryan Romantic Comedy

Lauren:
Clueless… because Cher Horowitz is EVERYTHING. (It ends in romance so I’m classifying it as a rom-com!) The best Cher quote is “LUCY!!! Where is my white collarless shirt from Fred Segal? It’s my most capable looking outfit!!” And my favourite scene is the one below… I actually LOVE her outfit in this scene, with the long sheer collar shirt & cropped sweater.

Clueless Cher Horowitz Romantic Comedy

Rebecca:
One of my favourite romantic comedies is The Holiday. Jude Law for the win!

The Holiday Jude Law Cameron Diaz Romantic Comedy

Tory:
My favourite rom-com is definitely Notting Hill. Between Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, the smile-factor is NEXT level. My favourite scene is when they are racing around London trying to get to Julia’s character’s film junket.

Notting Hill Car Scene Hugh Grant Romantic Comedy

Katie:
My all-time favourite romantic comedy is How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. The best scene is when Ben takes Andy to meet his parents and you witness them realize they are actually falling for each other during the shower scene as Chantal Kreviazuk’s “Feels Like Home” plays in the background. Classic!!! ❤️

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days Kate Hudson Matthew Romantic Comedy Shower Scene

Nathan:
I Love you, Man! So it’s a little more com than rom, but who doesn’t love a hilarious bromance? My favourite scene: Slappin’ da bass. My favourite quote: “Get home safe Pistol.” “You got it, Jobin.

I Love You Man Paul Rudd Jason Segel Romantic Comedy

Yulia:
Although it’s one of those bleak comedies, Lost in Translation has a great romance at its heart. Favourite quote: Bob: “Can you keep a secret? I’m trying to organize a prison break. I’m looking for, like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar, then the hotel, then the city, and then the country. Are you in or you out?

Lost In Translation Scarlett Johansson Bill Murray Romantic Comedy

Nicole M.:
Amélie! ❤️

Amelie-romantic-comedy

Amanda:
Princess Bride! Love the humour, period wardrobe and great romantic love story that melts my heart every time! Favorite scene is a classic moment in 80’s movie history when Wesley is tossed down the hill by the Princess who has not yet been aware of his identity. He is then suddenly discovered as her one true love when his words float up to her as he tumbles downward, “As… you… wish.” Really cool romantic scene. 🙂

The Princess Bride Robin Wright Romantic Comedy

Aisosa:
My all-time favourite romantic comedy is He’s Just Not That Into You.  So many key messages that girlfriends are either too naïve or caring to break to their girls – but sometimes, “If he’s not calling you, it’s because you are not on his mind” because “busy is another word for a**hole.” 🙂

He's Just Not That Into You Ginnifer Goodwin Justin Long Romantic Comedy

Cait:
When Harry Met Sally! Classic, but I love everything about it. Especially how the characters and their relationships change during the movie (case-in-point Sally’s take on Casablanca), but their most annoying – and uniquely loveable – qualities stay the same (cue final scene, with chocolate sauce on the side). The vignettes of couples throughout the movie are maybe my fave parts, but, again, I love the whole thing from the song ‘let’s call the whole thing off’ to the faceless man in Sally’s dreams.

When Harry Met Sally Meg Ryan Billy Crystal Romantic Comedy

Daria:
Does Forgetting Sarah Marshall count?

forgetting-sarah-marshall-kristen-bell-jason-segel-romantic-comedy

Nicole A:
Love Actually – It’s just so real. Bill Nighy is a genius. I watch it 10x every Christmas season!

love_actually_movie_image_bill_nighy_romantic_comedy

Erin:
I love P.S. I Love You because it makes me ugly cry and Gerard Butler is hot.

PS I Love You Hilary Swank Gerard Butler Romantic Comedy

Cassie:
Serendipity! 🙂 I love the moment that she gets the bill with his name and number on it. There’s that overwhelming happiness you get when you realize they’re going to be together!

Serendipity Kate Beckinsale John Cusack Romantic Comedy

Kristin:
The 40-Year Old Virgin! Judd Apatow. Steve Carrell. Catherine Keener. Paul Rudd! Just about as much awkwardness as you’d expect based on the title… but actually a really earnest love story. Laugh out loud funny.

The 40 Year Old Virgin Paul Rudd Romantic Comedy

Bunmi:
Top Five was written and directed by Chris Rock. He also stars in the film with Rosario Dawson and Gabrielle Union. It’s a Woody Allen-esque film that showcases Chris as comedian Andre Allen, the romantic lead, and Rosario as a New York Times writer Chelsea Brown; she is the mega cool love interest for Andre and love rival to Gabrielle Union’s Erica Long, a gorgeous reality mega-star who is about to get married to Andre. It is a smart, breezy film that can be a bit raunchy for some people’s tastes, but I like a bit of raunch! 🙂

Top Five Chris Rock Rosario Dawson Gabrielle Union Romantic Comedy

Olena:
My favourite romantic comedy is Bridget Jones’ Diary because I am basically her.

Bridget Jones Diary Rene Zellweger Romantic Comedy

Thompson Toronto Raises Over $2,000 for #MOVEMBER!

Posted on

Move With Us

Last week, Thomson Toronto generously donated their Screening Room for two back-to-back screenings of the film “Move With Us – A Transcanada-ish Documentary”. The film follows three Canadian men cycling from Vancouver to Toronto in the month of November to raise funds for Movember. The public event saw over 100 attendees visit the Screening Room and raised over $2,000 for Movember supporting men’s health – adding to the $125,000+ already raised by the “Moustache Ride” team! Below, read an interview with one of the stars of the film, Jordan Gildersleeve.

Have you always been a bicyclist?

I’ve been biking to work for the last 5 years. Before the ride, I had never done more than a 30 minute bike ride.

How many kms in total did you cycle?

4,500. Approximately 130km / day

Where did you sleep? What was that like?

We slept in an RV almost every night! I person slept beside Kevin (one of the other three cyclists). It certainly wasn’t exactly lemony fresh in there.

What does Movember mean to you?

Movember means a lot of things to me, but most of all it has brought attention to issues that previously weren’t at the forefront despite their prevalence. My father also past away this last summer from colon cancer, so what these guys stand for is incredibly important to me.

Can you name a few of your favorite moments during the journey?

Having a few hundred kids from a school in Winnipeg, Manitoba send us off was an amazing highlight. Hitting our $100K fundraising goal was also a very special moment. We had dedicated 2 months of our lives to that goal, so hitting it was huge. We eventually got to $125K.

Do you have a favorite area that you visited during the trip?

Lake Louise was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I’d never been there and we went there on a beautiful clear day. The Terry Fox monument was also a very special place for us.

Any wildlife encounters along the way?

Not really, but we meant a really strange man who gave us a beaver skull necklace (haha).

Any injuries?

Yes. Ben had a pretty bad fall and almost got run over by our RV. It was SKETCHY. Kevin was also hospitalized for a few days because of some intestinal issues caused by increasing our food intake so drastically so quickly. Sounds insane, I know.

What is your hope for the future of the Mo Ride?

No major plans to do any crazy rides. Ben, Kevin, and I are still best friends and I expect we’ll eventually do the rest of the ride from Toronto to St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Any new items on your bucket list?

I’ve always been intrigued by the El Camino de Santiago, an 800km walk in Spain.

This was such an amazing initiative inspired by your family and friends. Is your hope to inspire others to get more involved?

Absolutely. I hope this film inspires people to get involved with Movember, but also for people to not let the excuses not to do things get in the way of doing it. There were a lot of reasons why we shouldn’t have done this ride (e.g., We had to quit our jobs, it was winter time), but I am so happy that we did.

What is the one thing you hope others will take from this film?

Movember is all about starting conversations about men’s health. If people watch this film and talk to a few men in their lives about getting their prostate and colorectal examinations regularly and aren’t afraid to take advantage of many of the mental health initiatives that exist to support men, that the film will be a great success.

One of NKPR’s own, Tory Nash, is growing a moustache in support of Movember. To donate to his page, click here!

NKPR 26 Hours of Kindness

Posted on

Holiday NKPR_Banners + Insta_FINAL_13

The temperature is dropping, gift guides are popping up and festive retailer windows are being unveiled… it’s safe to say the holiday season is upon us! This year at NKPR, we want to deliver something truly meaningful. As things get busy, the effort to be nice can fall by the wayside. In lieu of giving traditional gifts, we’ve decided to donate our time and resources to try and alleviate a bit of that holiday stress.

On November 26, 2015 beginning at 6am, we’ll spend 26 consecutive hours giving back to the community through different acts of kindness!

Drawing on the support of our clients, strategic partners and friends, we’ve created a 26-hour program that focuses on giving back. Some of the activities during our 26 Hours  of Kindness will include:

·      Collecting and delivering clothing to the Canadian Diabetes Association
·      Decorating and beautifying seniors’ homes at Belmont House
·      Participating in a text-to-give program supporting Make-a-Wish
·      Cooking dinner for families at the St. Felix Community Centre
·      Brightening someone’s day on social media with a #randomactofkindness
·      Handing out hot pizza at midnight
·      Caroling for commuters
·      And much more!

The number 26 holds a lot of meaning for our president, Natasha Koifman. In addition to the 26-hour initiative this holiday season, she’s collaborated with custom scent expert Aromachology to create a philanthropic fragrance TWENTYSIX, with 100% of the profits supporting Artists for Peace and Justice. The fragrance, which combines 26 ingredients including noble Haitian Vetiver, is available to purchase at select Hudson’s Bay locations across the country and online at www.26forAPJ.com.

We hope that our efforts to spread a little holiday cheer inspire others to do the same. We’d love for you to join us and get involved with the 26 Hours of Kindness initiative! Later this week, we’ll post the full list of activities taking place on November 26th and November 27th. If you’d like to participate, contact Rebecca Kogon at rebecca@nkpr.net.

Plus, be sure to follow all 26 hours of kindness through the hashtag #NKPR26. We hope to see you all out there! 🙂

Toronto Fashion Week: NKPR’s Top SS16 Picks

Posted on

Another amazing Toronto Fashion Week has come and gone. Taking place once again at its new home in David Pecault Square, the downtown core was a constant buzz of excitement as incredible Canadian talent and Toronto’s finest gathered to debut and take in the Spring Summer 1016 collections.

We rounded up some of our favourite looks from the SS16 runway… Read on!

Sid Neigum

At just 27 years old, this Alberta-born designer is making waves on the fashion scene. After winning last year’s Mercedes Benz Start-Up Award, Sig Neigum returned to World MasterCard Fashion Week (WMCFW), debuting his Spring Summer 2016 collection on day one at David Pecault Square. The collection, a decided departure from his signature monochromatic aesthetic, incorporated stunning sculptural silhouettes in dramatic blues, military greens, blacks and whites.

Mikhael Kale

Always a favourite at WMCFW, Mikhael Kale’s Spring Summer 2016 collection did not disappoint! From hand-sewn pearls to beaded embellishment and floral embroidery, it was all about the details. High slits and shoulder cutouts added to Kale’s signature wow factor, while slicked back hair and dewy makeup let the clothes take centre stage.

Beaufille

Sisters Parris and Chloe Gordon debuted the Beaufille Spring Summer 2016 collection on day three of WMCFW. The chic and effortless collection had a distinct 70’s feel, from the cropped flares, modern crochet detailing and burnt orange and rich brown hues. Silver cut-out ring details and the use of high-tech materials added a futuristic cool factor to this beautiful debut.

Sears No 99 Wayne Gretzky

Sears Canada put on a show to be remembered, debuting the No 99 Wayne Gretzky collection with Spring Summer 2016 runway show! Developed in partnership with the great one himself, the collection offers a line of elevated casual menswear, inspired by Gretzky’s own modern classic sense of style. Mercerized cottons, cashmeres and merino wool give this collection a luxurious feel, offering men complete looks at affordable prices. Gretzky sat front row with members of his family and the Sears Canada team as they debuted this uniquely Canadian collection – which received the FASHION Magazine Award for Best Styling!

The show unveiled the limited edition Emily Haines signature leather jacket, with zip out clutch, and saw notable guests including Winnie Harlow, Danny Fernandes, Ana Golja, Tessa Virtue and many more in attendance. Inspired by the graceful ebb and flow of water, the collection featured playful splashes of colour, liquid-effect marble prints, fringes full of movement and even swim goggles and caps!

Stephan Caras

As usual, womenswear designer Stephan Caras wowed with his Spring Summer 2016 FLORÀL collection on the final day of WMCFW. Mixing prints, fabrics and colour, Caras proved that elegant can also be fun!  Inspired by the sensuality and delicacy of the blossom, featuring delicate French lace, exaggerated slits and bold geometrical beaded accents, the collection was created for the elegant and sensual modern day woman.

Inside NKPR’s Thanksgiving Favourites

Posted on

The Thanksgiving long-weekend is always a welcome time at the NKPR office. It’s the telltale indicator that fall is officially upon us and with it, some of our favourite things… The leaves changing from green to beautiful shades of red and orange; the crisp chill in the air signalling the re-introduction of our favourite fall fashion (or just a friendly excuse to do some wardrobe updating!); and of course, the quality time that we get to spend with family, friends and loved ones…

In honour of the upcoming Thanksgiving long-weekend, we pulled together a few more of our fall-inspired favourites.

The Sweet Scent of Fall

Is there anything better than the scent of Fall? (Other than Thanksgiving dinner, of course!) We love Saje Natural Wellness‘ Woodland Spring 100% Soy Wax Candle. With notes of eucalyptus, peppermint and atlas cedarwood, it’s the perfect way to bring the autumn air inside!

Woodland Springs $16.95

Cozy Sweaters To Snuggle In

Talking to Saje Natural Wellness About The Healing Power of Scent

Posted on

Saje 2

Inside NKPR, we’ve long been enjoying the therapeutic properties of Saje Natural Wellness’ incredible essential oils…but wanted to know how exactly it all works! We talk to the brand’s product and sales trainer Linnette Carriere, who shares her wisdom on the healing powers of scent….

Describe scent and the way it impacts and affects the human body?

Scent in its 100% natural form is derived from the root, fruit, wood, plant, flower and herb and called essential oils. When inhaled, these minute molecules enter the nose and affect the limbic system. The limbic system retains our memories and emotions and release hormones which effect the whole body. When we smell something we enjoy, this floods the body with endorphins making you feel great and changing your mood 100% naturally.

How can scent help us with creating and living the life we envision for ourselves?

When we send an intention, the more we focus on the intention, the better we attract what we desire. There is such a connection between scent and memories that the brain can be “trained” to remember the intention you set. If I sent an intention to overcome my fear of public speaking and engage an audience with a presentation, I may choose to smell oils that give me confidence like orange, rose, and bergamot. When I smell the oils I set my intention and visualize a positive outcome. Just before the presentation, the oils are inhaled deeply and the Limbic system is activated to recall the desired emotions of the outcome before it has even happened.

What scents are you most inclined to choose when you are feeling stressed or having an off day?

It is rare but I usually “follow my noise” to what smells great. I love the complexity of the blend Stress Release that Saje created. It is so powerfully supportive of the adrenal glands. We live busy lives and anything that addresses symptoms of stress help lift my mood.

Let’s talk more about feelings and how essential oils can influence our moods. How can we….

Increase feelings of happiness…

Essential oils of fruit like Orange, Bergamot, Lime, and Mandarin are great for boosting cheerfulness and happiness. Research has been shown that orange helps to reduce pulse rate and salivary cortisol in an anxiety state.

Combat feelings of anger…

Essential oil of Jasmine, Patchouli, Rose, Neroli, and Ylang ylang address symptoms of anger. It is best to follow what your body likes the smell of. Your noise will be attracted to what it needs to rebalance itself. Floral essential oils are known to promote deeper breathing, which serve to alkalize the blood
and naturally lower blood pressure levels.

Ease feelings of sadness or grief…

I gained so much knowledge in this area when my father passed. I diffused oils through his last month and during the grieving process after. Similar to the oils recommended for anger, these oils help with grief and releasing emotions. I personally used Grapefruit, Rose, Cananga, and Geranium.

Decrease stress…

Essential oils that are grounding like sandalwood, vetiver, patchouli, and trees help promote feeling of peace. They affect the limbic system, which then send hormones through the body and lowers blood pressure naturally.

Ground an overactive mind…

Ancient oils used for ceremonial purpose are recommended to tap into inner wisdom. Sandalwood, Cedar-wood, Sage, and Green Spikenard help deepen meditation because they are grounding. They calm the body and mind, which can be challenging to turn off sometimes.

What exactly happens when the brain encounters scent?

When inhaled, these minuet molecules enter the nose and effect part of the brain, the limbic system. The limbic system retains our memories and emotions and release hormones which effect the whole body. When we smell something we like, this floods the body with endorphins, our happy chemicals, making you feel well and lifting your mood.

Essential oils are also know for their detoxify properties which may increase more energy, heighten mental focus and clarity, and improve sleep quality.

Do you believe that scent has the power to heal?

For over ten years, I have had the pleasure of watching people receive the healing power of plants and it is impossible not to believe. From headaches/migraines, depression/anxiety, chronic pain/severe debilitating pain, allergies, digestive disorders, and beyond, essential oils heal on a body, mind and spirit level.

Is the trend of mindfulness and healthy living fleeting, or is it here to stay?

We are starting to notice that change needs to happen in the world. Naturally healing is making a resurgence because we understand that drugs are not a solution to every ailment. It has been 75 years since the golden age of the pharmaceutical industry. The boomer generation is becoming more open to traditional and natural remedies that have been used for hundreds of year. Trendsetters are increasingly adopting this lifestyle and this has an influence on how people think. When someone hears about his or her favourite musician or actor endorsing a more natural lifestyle change, they start to look at ways they can do the same thing.
